Rwanda is taking significant steps toward transforming its energy sector, as an international review mission has assessed the country’s readiness to introduce nuclear power into its energy mix.

An Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency recently visited Rwanda to evaluate progress in building the systems and frameworks required for a safe and sustainable nuclear energy programme.

Ambitious Energy Vision

The government of Rwanda has set an ambitious target of generating 60 to 70 percent of its electricity from nuclear power in the future. As part of this long-term strategy, the country is planning to deploy Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), with the first unit expected to become operational in the early 2030s.

This move reflects Rwanda’s commitment to ensuring reliable, low-carbon energy to support economic growth and industrial development.

Focus on Safety and Infrastructure

The INIR mission examined Rwanda’s progress across multiple areas, including regulatory frameworks, safety measures, human resource development, and site planning. These elements are essential for establishing a nuclear programme that meets international safety and security standards.

The review team provided recommendations aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring that all aspects of nuclear development are aligned with global best practices.
