New York, July 2025 – The United Nations has issued a stark reminder of a growing global emergency: access to safe drinking water remains out of reach for over 2.2 billion people worldwide. In a recent social media post, the UN reiterated its position that “water is a right, not a privilege,” drawing global attention to the urgent need for equitable water access and better sanitation infrastructure. The post emphasizes how this ongoing crisis is exacerbated by the worsening impacts of climate change. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and increased water pollution are compounding the challenges, especially in vulnerable regions of Africa, Asia, and parts of Latin America. These environmental pressures not only threaten human health but also intensify conflicts over dwindling water resources. According to the United Nations, the lack of clean water and proper sanitation contributes to the spread of disease, stunted economic growth, and deepens poverty cycles—particularly among women and children, who often bear the responsibility of collecting water from distant or unsafe sources. To confront this crisis, the UN has reaffirmed its commitment to the #GlobalGoals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. However, progress has been slow, and with less than five years remaining in the decade, the gap between ambition and action remains concerning.
