Highlighting the theme of the day, the ministry encouraged the public to embrace handloom products as a way to promote local craftsmanship and preserve traditional artistry. “Every thread in a handloom creation tells a story of heritage, patience, and exceptional skill,” the Ministry stated. “By choosing handloom, we not only support livelihoods but also become part of a movement to protect our cultural identity.” Observed annually on August 7, National Handloom Day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement launched in 1905, which championed indigenous industries and self-reliance. Today, the handloom sector continues to serve as a symbol of sustainability and rural empowerment, with millions of weavers—most of them women—sustaining their families and communities through their craft. This year’s observance also reinforced the government’s #VocalForLocal campaign, urging people to choose locally made handloom products over mass-produced alternatives.
