Brazil Offshore Oil Project Advances With Major Sepia 2 Supply Contract
Brasília: Brazil’s offshore energy sector has reached another important stage with a major supply agreement for Petrobras’ Sepia 2 development in the pre-salt Santos Basin.
French industrial company Vallourec has secured a contract from Subsea7 to provide carbon-steel seamless pipes and thermal-insulation coating for the offshore project. The agreement covers approximately 130 kilometers of rigid risers and flowlines, involving more than 15,000 tonnes of steel pipe.
The Sepia 2 development is located roughly 280 kilometers from Brazil’s coastline in ultra-deep waters. The project is planned at a water depth of approximately 2,170 meters and includes multiple production wells together with subsea infrastructure connected to a new floating production, storage and offloading vessel.
The newly announced supply contract is part of the wider engineering, procurement, construction and installation work being carried out for the field’s development.
The pipes will be manufactured in Brazil, while specialized coating operations will also be carried out at a Brazilian facility. This means a significant portion of the industrial activity associated with the project will take place within the country.
The Sepia 2 development forms part of Brazil’s continuing expansion of production from its pre-salt offshore resources. These fields are among the country’s most important sources of oil and natural gas.
Operating in such extreme offshore conditions requires specialized equipment capable of handling high pressure, low temperatures and highly demanding subsea environments. The infrastructure connecting underwater wells to the production vessel therefore requires carefully engineered materials and protective systems.
The latest contract also demonstrates the scale of investment surrounding Brazil’s offshore energy industry. Major developments in the Santos Basin involve international engineering companies, Brazilian manufacturing facilities and advanced subsea technologies.
Construction and installation activities will progress in stages as the wider Sepia 2 development moves toward production.
The project is expected to remain an important component of Petrobras’ offshore development program, while the associated industrial contracts are providing additional activity for Brazil’s energy-services and manufacturing sectors.
With the latest supply agreement now announced, work on the infrastructure required for Sepia 2 is moving forward as Petrobras and its partners continue developing Brazil’s deepwater pre-salt resources.
