Mexico Marks Independence Day as President Emphasizes National Sovereignty
Mexico City: Mexico is celebrating its Independence Day on September 16, with nationwide events taking place as the country marks the 216th anniversary of the beginning of its independence movement.

President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the nation from the National Palace during the traditional Independence ceremony. Her message highlighted Mexico’s independence, sovereignty, equality, democracy and national dignity.
The annual celebration began with the traditional Grito de Independencia, commemorating the call for independence launched by Miguel Hidalgo in 1810. Large crowds gathered in Mexico City’s Zócalo for the national festivities.
Sheinbaum also recognized Indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities and Mexican migrants during her address, adding several references to social equality and national identity.
The celebrations come at a time when Mexico is paying close attention to its relationship with the United States and broader questions surrounding national sovereignty and international cooperation.
Security preparations have been extensive across the country. Authorities have deployed additional personnel around major public celebrations, transport facilities and important government locations.
Mexico City has also implemented special security and traffic arrangements covering all 16 boroughs during the Independence celebrations and the military parade.
The capital’s main square has attracted large numbers of residents and visitors, with music, cultural performances and public gatherings forming part of the festivities.
Independence Day is one of Mexico’s most important national holidays and is traditionally marked by public ceremonies, fireworks, concerts and community celebrations throughout the country.
State governments have also organized their own events, although local security conditions have affected the scale of celebrations in some regions.
In Sinaloa, for example, authorities resumed Independence celebrations after previous festivities had been suspended because of security concerns. Officials implemented extensive security measures around public events.
The national celebrations are continuing throughout September 16, with the traditional military parade taking place in Mexico City as part of the country’s Independence Day program.
For millions of Mexicans, the occasion combines historical remembrance with contemporary expressions of national identity and unity.
