The suspect, identified as Sok Thun, is accused of demanding the money from a fabric businessperson in Svay Rieng during August, according to information released Monday.
The Svay Rieng Provincial Court issued the warrant as investigators moved to locate the suspect and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged extortion. Police are also examining the possible involvement of two additional individuals.
Investigators are expected to gather evidence concerning the alleged demand for money, communications with the businessperson and any transactions connected to the case.
Extortion cases can involve significant financial and personal pressure on victims, particularly when alleged offenders use threats or intimidation to obtain money. Authorities have not publicly disclosed all details of the alleged threats in this case.
The court’s warrant does not establish the suspect’s guilt. Sok Thun remains entitled to the legal protections and judicial process provided under Cambodian law.
Police are continuing efforts to locate the wanted man while their investigation into the other suspected participants remains ongoing.
