Nordic Countries Join Forces to Strengthen Security of Essential Supplies
Sweden and its Nordic neighbours have agreed to deepen cooperation aimed at keeping essential goods and services available during serious crises and potential wartime disruptions.
The Nordic countries signed a Joint Nordic Declaration on Security of Supply on establishing a framework for closer regional cooperation on preparedness, logistics, production and trade.
Regional Supply Chains in Focus
The declaration recognises that Nordic countries share important economic and security interests and can improve resilience by working more closely together.
The initiative is intended to help maintain reliable flows of essential products and services during peacetime emergencies, security crises and, in the most serious circumstances, war.
Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors
Under the declaration, Nordic countries will explore ways to coordinate production, logistics, distribution and trade.
The aim is to reduce vulnerabilities and make it easier for the region to respond collectively if critical supply chains are disrupted.
New Study Planned
The Nordic Security of Supply Network will be used as the main framework for developing the cooperation.
A feasibility study examining additional areas for Nordic collaboration is planned for 2027. The countries also intend to prepare a joint report every two years containing proposals for improving security of supply.
Towards a Wider Nordic Agreement
The participating countries also plan to negotiate a Nordic agreement covering security of supply during crises and war.
Such an agreement could complement or replace certain existing bilateral arrangements between participating countries, subject to further negotiations.
Business Community to Be Involved
The initiative is not limited to governments. The declaration calls for stronger engagement with relevant authorities and the business community.
A high-level Nordic seminar on security of supply is also planned for 2028, bringing together political leaders, government agencies and business representatives.
Sweden Highlights Regional Resilience
Sweden’s Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin said stronger cooperation among Nordic neighbours can improve the region’s ability to prevent and manage disruptions.
The initiative reflects growing attention across Europe to supply-chain resilience amid geopolitical uncertainty and continuing security challenges.
What Happens Next?
The declaration itself is not legally binding. Instead, it provides a framework for developing deeper cooperation and preparing future arrangements.
The Nordic countries will now work through their existing network to identify areas where cooperation can be expanded and to develop proposals for stronger regional preparedness.
