Philippines: Albay Declares State of Calamity as Dengue Cases Rise
Legazpi City, Philippines — September 13, 2026: Authorities in Albay province have declared a state of calamity following a sustained increase in dengue infections across the province.

The provincial government approved the declaration during a special session after health officials reported 1,785 cumulative dengue cases and 14 deaths between January 1 and September 8.
The decision allows the provincial government to access its Quick Response Fund, which can be used to purchase dengue testing kits, mosquito-control chemicals, medicines, medical supplies and other emergency equipment.
Legazpi records highest number of cases
Among Albay’s local government units, Legazpi City recorded the highest number of reported infections with 378 cases. Bacacay followed with 254 cases, while Daraga recorded 188.
Other areas have also reported significant numbers, including Tabaco City with 158 cases, Malilipot with 130 and Ligao City with 102.
The reported deaths have been concentrated in several municipalities, with Legazpi City recording five fatalities.
Authorities urge residents to remove mosquito breeding sites
Health authorities are urging residents to take preventive measures around their homes and communities. Particular attention has been directed toward stagnant water, uncovered containers, gutters, canals and other locations where mosquitoes can breed.
Community members have also been encouraged to participate in local dengue-control activities and help health workers identify potential breeding grounds.
The calamity declaration is expected to strengthen the province’s ability to respond to the outbreak and provide local authorities with additional resources for disease prevention and treatment.
Officials continue to monitor the situation across all 18 local government units in Albay, while health teams work to contain further transmission.
