Thai Buddhist Abbot Arrested Over Alleged Multi-Million-Dollar Temple Fund Embezzlement
A senior Buddhist abbot in Thailand has been arrested over allegations that millions of dollars donated to his monastery were diverted instead of being deposited into the temple’s accounts, triggering a major investigation into suspected embezzlement and money laundering.

The suspect, Phra Wachirayan Wi, 66, was the abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan, a historic temple in Ayutthaya. Police arrested him after an investigation into alleged misuse of funds and other misconduct.
Investigators said their inquiry began after an anonymous complaint raised questions about the handling of money associated with the temple. Authorities subsequently examined financial records, donation receipts and other evidence connected with the monastery.
According to investigators, around 89 million baht was donated for temple renovation work, while another 2.8 million baht was connected to payments for Buddhist amulets and other religious objects. Police allege that the money did not enter the temple’s official account.
The investigation has also uncovered substantial assets that authorities are now examining. Police reported finding large amounts of cash, gold and other valuable property, while officials are working to determine which assets may belong to the temple and which may be personal property.
A 47-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the investigation. Police suspect she may have assisted in converting or concealing some of the funds.
The case has attracted widespread attention because of the position held by the accused monk and the large sums involved. Wat Phutthaisawan is a prominent historic monastery with a significant following, including people from Thailand’s political, business and security communities.
The former abbot was subsequently defrocked following the investigation. Thai authorities are examining whether other individuals may have been involved in the alleged financial activities and whether additional funds were improperly transferred.
Police have said the investigation will be expanded as financial records and seized assets are analysed. Investigators are expected to trace the movement of money and determine where donations intended for the monastery ultimately went.
The case has also renewed public discussion about financial transparency within religious institutions in Thailand. Temple donations can involve substantial amounts of money, making oversight and proper accounting important for maintaining public confidence.
Authorities have stressed that the investigation remains ongoing. The allegations against the former abbot and the other suspect will ultimately have to be established through the legal process.
Police are continuing to examine financial documents, property records and other evidence as they attempt to determine the full scale of the alleged scheme and identify anyone else who may have participated.
The investigation could lead to further arrests or charges if authorities uncover evidence connecting additional people to the suspected misuse of temple funds.
