UN and Switzerland Bring Global Partners Together to Advance Peace Efforts in Sudan
Geneva: International diplomatic efforts to end Sudan’s prolonged conflict gained renewed attention as the United Nations and Switzerland convened a high-level consultative meeting in Geneva to improve coordination among countries and organisations working toward peace.

The meeting, held on October brought together representatives of nearly two dozen countries and major regional and international organisations. Discussions focused on reducing hostilities, improving humanitarian access and supporting a political process capable of delivering lasting stability in Sudan.
International Partners Seek a Coordinated Approach
The consultations aim to ensure that separate diplomatic initiatives reinforce one another rather than operate in isolation. Participants are considering practical measures to reduce tensions, strengthen communication channels and create conditions that could support a comprehensive ceasefire.
The discussions involve international and regional stakeholders, including the African Union, the European Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
Switzerland is co-hosting the initiative as part of its wider diplomatic engagement in the crisis. The meeting builds on earlier consultations held in several international cities since 2024.
Humanitarian Conditions Remain a Major Concern
Sudan’s conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, has caused extensive displacement and severe humanitarian needs.
Civilians continue to face insecurity, food shortages and difficulties accessing essential services. Humanitarian organisations have also raised concerns about protecting vulnerable communities and ensuring that assistance can reach people affected by the fighting.
Participants are examining how diplomatic coordination can support safer humanitarian access and stronger respect for international humanitarian law.
Political Dialogue Seen as Essential to Lasting Stability
Diplomatic representatives have emphasised that a durable settlement cannot rely solely on military developments. An inclusive political process that reflects the aspirations of Sudanese people is considered essential to building a stable future.
The discussions are intended to identify areas where international partners can coordinate their influence, encourage de-escalation and support credible political engagement led by Sudanese stakeholders.
However, the meeting itself does not guarantee an immediate ceasefire or a final peace agreement. Progress will depend on the willingness of the parties to the conflict to engage meaningfully and implement any agreed measures.
What Comes Next?
The Geneva consultations represent another attempt to bring international diplomatic initiatives into closer alignment. Participants are seeking practical steps that could reduce suffering, improve access to humanitarian assistance and create a foundation for renewed political dialogue.
The effectiveness of the process will ultimately depend on whether diplomatic commitments translate into measurable improvements in security and conditions for civilians across Sudan.
