UN Chief Calls for Stronger Global Cooperation as World Faces Four Major Power Tests
New York: The United Nations has called for stronger international cooperation as governments confront growing challenges involving conflicts, inequality, climate change and the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

Speaking during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Secretary-General António Guterres said the international system is facing widening divisions and argued that global institutions need to adapt to major changes in the distribution of power.
Four Major Challenges
The UN chief identified four broad areas that are shaping the current global environment: war and peace, inequality, climate change and artificial intelligence.
He said these issues are interconnected and will influence whether countries move toward greater cooperation or deeper international fragmentation.
Conflicts in different regions have placed pressure on international diplomacy and humanitarian systems, while economic inequality continues to affect development opportunities in many countries.
Push for Security Council Reform
Reform of the UN Security Council was another major issue highlighted during the General Assembly.
Guterres called for a Council that better reflects today’s geopolitical realities and specifically pointed to the continued absence of a permanent African representation.
The question of Security Council reform has remained a long-running issue within the UN, with different countries and regional groups advocating changes to the Council’s membership and working methods.
AI Governance Becomes Global Priority
Artificial intelligence has emerged as another major area of international diplomacy.
The UN is pushing for international rules and safeguards covering the development and use of AI. Guterres has argued that governments need stronger cooperation to ensure that AI remains safe, transparent and accountable.
The UN’s work includes an international scientific panel on AI and a broader Global Digital Compact aimed at strengthening cooperation on digital technologies and AI governance.
Climate and Inequality
Climate change and economic inequality remain central elements of the UN’s global agenda.
Developing countries continue to seek greater access to financing, technology and international support as they deal with climate-related risks and development challenges.
The UN has also emphasized that global cooperation is important for advancing sustainable development while reducing inequalities between and within countries.
A Changing Global Order
The UN’s recent discussions reflect a broader debate about how international institutions should function in a world where economic and political influence is increasingly distributed among multiple centres of power.
Earlier in September, Guterres also called for reforms to global institutions, including the Security Council and international financial institutions, arguing that structures created after the Second World War need to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.
Focus on International Cooperation
The UN’s message comes as governments face simultaneous challenges involving security, technology, climate and economic development.
The organisation is seeking greater coordination among countries while encouraging governments, scientists, businesses and civil society to participate in discussions over emerging global issues.
With AI governance, climate action, conflicts and institutional reform all receiving increased international attention, cooperation among countries is expected to remain a central theme of global affairs discussions.
