🌍 Earth Is Not Standing Straight

Earth rotates around its axis, but that axis is tilted by approximately 23.5 degrees relative to the plane of its orbit around the Sun.

As Earth travels around the Sun during the year, this tilt causes different parts of the planet to receive varying amounts of sunlight.

That changing sunlight is the main reason seasons occur.

☀️ Why Does Summer Become Hotter?

When a hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, sunlight reaches it more directly.

The days also become longer, allowing that region to receive sunlight for more hours.

Together, these factors generally produce warmer conditions.

When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, it experiences summer while the Southern Hemisphere experiences winter.

Six months later, the situation reverses.

During winter, a hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun.

Sunlight arrives at a lower angle and spreads its energy over a larger surface area. Daylight hours are also shorter.

As a result, less solar energy reaches the surface during the day, generally producing colder conditions.

🌎 What Happens at the Equator?

The equatorial region receives relatively direct sunlight throughout the year.

Because of this, temperatures near the Equator usually change less dramatically between seasons than they do in areas farther north or south.

Instead of four strongly defined seasons, many equatorial regions experience variations mainly between wetter and drier periods.

🌸 What Are the Equinoxes?

Twice each year, Earth reaches an orbital position where neither hemisphere is strongly tilted toward or away from the Sun.

These events are called equinoxes.

They occur around March and September and mark the astronomical transitions into spring and autumn in the respective hemispheres.

🌞 What Are the Solstices?

The June solstice occurs when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted most strongly toward the Sun. It produces the longest day and shortest night of the year in much of the Northern Hemisphere.

The December solstice produces the opposite pattern.

These events mark the astronomical beginnings of summer and winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

🚫 Is Earth’s Distance From the Sun Responsible?

A common misconception is that summer happens because Earth is closer to the Sun.

That is not the main reason.

Earth’s orbit is slightly elliptical, but the seasonal cycle is primarily caused by the 23.5-degree axial tilt.

In fact, Earth is closest to the Sun during early January—when it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Latitude plays a major role.

Places near the poles experience extreme seasonal changes in daylight. Some regions can have almost continuous daylight during part of the year and extremely long periods of darkness during another.

Places near the Equator experience much smaller seasonal changes in daylight.

The changing seasons demonstrate how Earth’s movement through space affects life on the planet.

Earth’s rotation creates day and night, while its revolution around the Sun combined with its axial tilt produces the annual cycle of seasons.
