Today, the Moon can appear almost exactly the same apparent size as the Sun in Earth’s sky, allowing spectacular total solar eclipses.

As the Moon slowly moves farther away, its apparent size will gradually decrease.

Far in the future, the Moon will no longer appear large enough to completely cover the Sun during a total solar eclipse.

This means humanity exists during a remarkable period in Earth’s astronomical history when total solar eclipses are possible.

🔬 How Do Scientists Know the Moon Is Moving?

Scientists use laser ranging to measure the Moon’s distance.

Reflectors placed on the lunar surface by Apollo astronauts and Soviet robotic missions allow researchers to bounce laser pulses toward the Moon and measure the return time.

These measurements provide extremely precise information about the Earth-Moon distance.

The Moon may look like a silent, permanent companion in the night sky, but the Earth-Moon system is actually dynamic.

Every year, the Moon moves outward by only a few centimetres. Yet across geological timescales, that tiny movement records a much bigger story about gravity, tides, Earth’s rotation and the evolution of our planet’s closest celestial neighbour.
