China Revives Market Support Measures as Stock Selloff Continues, Investor Confidence Remains Weak
BEIJING: Chinese authorities are bringing back financial support mechanisms previously used to stabilize the country’s stock market as renewed selling pressure puts investor confidence under strain.

The latest measures include liquidity-support facilities and relending operations designed to encourage purchases of shares and improve market conditions. However, the renewed intervention has so far faced skepticism among investors, with stock prices continuing to experience downward pressure.
Beijing Reintroduces Financial Support Tools
China is once again relying on two important financial instruments to support its equity markets.
One is a swap facility that helps financial institutions obtain funding for stock purchases, while the other involves relending operations intended to make additional financing available to support investment in equities.
These mechanisms were previously introduced during the market downturn in 2024. Their return, with certain adjustments, signals renewed efforts by policymakers to prevent further deterioration in market sentiment.
The measures are intended to improve liquidity, encourage institutional participation and provide additional support to share prices.
ETF Trading Activity Signals Increased Market Intervention
Trading activity in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) associated with China’s national investment support efforts has also increased significantly.
According to the reported market figures, turnover in these funds reached approximately 120 billion yuan, equivalent to around 18 billion US dollars.
This represented the highest trading activity since late January and suggested that state-backed investors were becoming more active in the market.
Such purchases can provide additional liquidity during periods of market uncertainty and may help reduce excessive selling pressure.
Investors Remain Cautious Despite Government Support
Despite the return of financial support measures, investors have not shown an entirely positive response.
The continuation of the stock market decline suggests that liquidity injections alone may not be sufficient to restore confidence.
Market participants are also concerned about broader economic conditions, corporate earnings prospects and the sustainability of a recovery.
For a lasting improvement, investors generally look for stronger economic fundamentals alongside government intervention.
Challenges Ahead for China’s Financial Markets
China’s latest efforts highlight the difficulty of maintaining stock market stability during periods of declining confidence.
Financial support mechanisms can help improve market liquidity and reduce short-term pressure, but their effectiveness depends partly on whether investors regain confidence in the wider economy.
The authorities now face the challenge of balancing immediate market stabilization with policies that encourage sustainable investment and long-term economic growth.
The coming period will be important in determining whether renewed financial support can improve sentiment or whether deeper economic concerns will continue to weigh on Chinese equities.
