NASA’s Roman Space Telescope Activates Main Camera as Scientists Prepare for New Cosmic Surveys
Space Science: NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has successfully activated its primary Wide Field Instrument, marking an important step in preparations for the observatory’s future scientific operations.

The infrared instrument contains a 300-megapixel camera designed to survey large areas of the universe while maintaining detailed observations of distant astronomical objects. NASA reported the activation on September 15, 2026.
A Wide-Area View of the Universe
Roman’s Wide Field Instrument is designed to observe enormous sections of the sky far more efficiently than many traditional space telescopes.
Its wide field of view will allow astronomers to collect large quantities of astronomical data while searching for distant galaxies, stars and other cosmic phenomena.
Coronagraph Also Begins Testing
Alongside activation of the primary instrument, NASA has begun initial testing of Roman’s Coronagraph Instrument.
The coronagraph is designed to block or suppress the intense glare of stars, potentially allowing scientists to observe much fainter objects located close to them.
This capability is particularly important for the study of exoplanets and planetary systems.
Searching for Distant Worlds
One of Roman’s major scientific objectives will be investigating planets beyond our Solar System. Its observations are expected to complement discoveries made by other space telescopes by combining wide-field surveys with detailed observations.
Scientists will also use Roman to investigate dark energy, galaxy evolution and the large-scale structure of the universe.
From Testing to Scientific Operations
The activation of the Wide Field Instrument does not mean Roman has already begun its full scientific survey programme. NASA still has to complete extensive testing and calibration of the spacecraft’s instruments.
These checks are intended to ensure that the observatory performs correctly before its major scientific observations begin.
A New Era of Wide-Field Astronomy
Once operational, Roman is expected to produce enormous datasets covering large portions of the sky. Scientists will use those observations to investigate some of the biggest questions in modern astronomy.
The successful activation of its primary instrument represents another milestone in preparing the observatory for that mission.
