The growth reflects expanding commercial relations between Russia and Southeast Asian economies, particularly in energy, fertilizers and agricultural products.

Speaking during a virtual meeting of foreign and trade ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Lavrov highlighted the significant progress made in regional trade and emphasized Moscow’s intention to deepen economic partnerships across Asia.

According to the Russian foreign minister, the country’s exports to ASEAN members increased by 44 percent over the 10-year period. Energy shipments recorded an even stronger performance, rising by 85 percent, while fertilizer exports grew by 36 percent.

Agricultural trade showed particularly remarkable expansion, with Russian agricultural exports to the ASEAN region increasing approximately 50 times.

Energy and Agriculture Drive Trade Expansion

Energy remains one of the most important components of Russia’s commercial engagement with Southeast Asia.

The increase in energy exports demonstrates the growing importance of regional markets for Russian suppliers as countries across Asia seek reliable sources of fuel and other essential commodities.

Agricultural products have also become an increasingly significant part of the relationship. The substantial rise in shipments reflects expanding opportunities for food supplies and agricultural cooperation between Russia and Southeast Asian economies.

Fertilizers represent another important sector, particularly for countries seeking to strengthen agricultural productivity and food security.

China Remains a Key Economic Partner

Lavrov also highlighted China’s central position in Russia’s broader Asian economic strategy.

He noted that bilateral trade between Moscow and Beijing has remained above 200 billion U.S. dollars annually for several years.

According to his remarks, trade between the two countries increased by more than 30 percent in 2026 compared with the corresponding period of 2025.

The growing commercial relationship reflects cooperation across several sectors, including energy, transportation, industrial production and technological development.

Russia considers China an important partner in expanding economic connections across the wider Eurasian region.

Russia Promotes New Trade and Transport Corridors

Transportation and logistics infrastructure are emerging as important elements of Russia’s strategy to strengthen economic relations with Asia.

Lavrov said transport routes crossing Russian territory are becoming increasingly attractive for moving goods between Asian and European markets.

He pointed to their potential advantages in terms of distance, safety and transportation costs amid disruptions affecting other international trade routes.

The Northern Sea Route is also receiving growing attention, with APEC economies showing increased interest in shipping opportunities along the Arctic corridor.

Developing these connections could create additional options for international businesses seeking alternative transportation networks and more diversified supply chains.

Greater Eurasian Partnership Remains a Strategic Objective

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s commitment to expanding regional cooperation in trade, logistics, digitalization, economic integration, tourism and creative industries.

He also referred to the proposed Greater Eurasian Partnership, an initiative associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin that aims to strengthen economic connections across a broad geographical region.

Moscow has presented the concept as an open framework for international cooperation involving countries and regional organizations.

Asia-Pacific Cooperation Gains Importance

The latest trade figures underline the growing importance of economic engagement between Russia and Asian markets.

With stronger commercial links in energy, agriculture, fertilizers and transportation, Moscow is seeking to expand its presence in regional supply chains and develop additional opportunities for international trade.

As economic relationships across Asia continue to evolve, Russia’s expanding engagement with ASEAN and China could play an important role in shaping future Eurasian trade and investment connections.
