Renewed Military Activity by China Sparks Concerns in Taiwan Strait

Taipei, June 23, 2025 — Tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalated once again on Monday as Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported a fresh incursion by Chinese military forces near its territory. According to the MND, five aircraft belonging to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and nine naval vessels from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) were detected operating in areas surrounding Taiwan before 6:00 AM local time.
Notably, three of the five PLA aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait’s median line—an unofficial boundary widely regarded as a buffer zone between Taiwan and mainland China. After breaching the median line, these aircraft entered Taiwan’s southwestern and southeastern Air Defense Identification Zones (ADIZ), prompting swift tracking and monitoring actions by Taiwan’s defense forces. The MND confirmed the developments in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), assuring that appropriate countermeasures were taken.
This incursion came just a day after a similar but more extensive operation by Beijing. On Sunday, Taiwan had identified 12 Chinese aircraft and six PLAN vessels, with eight of the aircraft also crossing the median line into Taiwan’s ADIZs, including the northern zone.
The back-to-back military sorties are being viewed as part of a growing pattern of Chinese pressure tactics against Taiwan. These provocative maneuvers reflect increasing regional instability and reinforce the island nation’s commitment to maintaining vigilance and defense preparedness amid rising geopolitical friction.
Taiwan continues to closely monitor the situation, emphasizing peace and stability while preparing for any potential escalations.
