Usually referred to as the “Great War,” World War I tore across 1914 to 1918.From this fight, new technology developed; empires fell and a generation was lost. Along with the Allies were France, Britain, Russia, the US, Canada, Australia, India, South Africa, Japan, Belgium, Serbia, Greece, Romania, Portugal, Montenegro, and Brazil. The Central Powers considered all together were Germany, Austria- Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, and Romania.
The party of Serbian nationalists killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. This started the conflict. This event set off a sequence of military mobilisations and alliances leading to war beginning point.
The Italian Front was in Italy; the Balkans Front was in Serbia and Greece; the Eastern Front ran across Russia; the Middle Eastern Front crossed Mesopotamia and Palestine; the African Front ran across Namibia and Cameroon; and the Asian Front passed across China and Korea. Western Front was housed by France and Belgium. Given both sides lost a lot of soldiers, this was a war of attrition. Tanks, aircraft, and poison gas were among the modern tools that made the fight even more deadly.
The battle had major global impact. Among the collapsing empires were the Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman ones. From it developed the US, the USSR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Iraq among other countries. The conflict also changed the map of the world since some countries lost land while others acquired their freedom.
Moreover seriously influencing society was the war. It claimed the life or caused injuries to a whole generation of young men serving their nation. From it also sprang fresh political and social movements including feminism, socialism, and nationalism. The struggle resulted in the fall of the old aristocracy and the birth of a modern middle class.
Apart from people, the conflict affected world economy significantly. From it proceeded unemployment, inflation, and a dramatic rise in government debt. From it also emerged new industries as the chemical and aviation ones.
All things considered, World War I was a disaster touching many people worldwide. From this, empires fell apart, new countries emerged, and millions of people died. It also highlighted the start of social and political systems. It also greatly affected world economy and helped young companies grow. The fight changed the course of history and helped to define the planet as it exists now.
