Today, the nation commemorates Quit India Movement Day, honoring the historic call for independence made on August 8, 1942, when Mahatma Gandhi urged British colonial rulers to “Quit India” and leave the country in the hands of its people.

Observed every year, the day marks one of the most decisive moments in India’s fight against colonial rule. The movement was launched during the Second World War at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee. Addressing a large gathering at Gowalia Tank Maidan (now August Kranti Maidan), Gandhi delivered his iconic speech calling for “Do or Die,” inspiring millions of Indians to rise against British authority.

The Quit India Movement was not a peaceful transition — it was met with harsh repression. The British government arrested almost all prominent leaders of the Congress, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and Gandhi himself. Despite the leadership being behind bars, protests, strikes, and acts of civil disobedience spread like wildfire across the nation.

Historians note that the movement, although brutally suppressed, signaled the irreversible momentum toward independence. “It showed the British that India’s demand for freedom was non-negotiable,” says Dr. Meera Kulkarni, a historian specializing in the independence era.

On this day, political leaders, schools, and civic organizations across the country hold remembrance programs, speeches, and exhibitions highlighting the courage and sacrifices of those who took part. Wreaths are laid at memorials, and students are encouraged to learn about the events that shaped modern India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message shared today, said, “The Quit India Movement was a defining moment in our freedom struggle. It united the nation with a singular purpose — to secure independence. We salute all those who endured hardships and gave their lives for our freedom.”

Eighty-three years later, Quit India Movement Day remains a reminder of the resilience and unity that powered India’s journey to sovereignty, and a call to preserve the democratic values for which so many fought.
