The Committee of Management, Shahi Jama Masjid, Sambhal, has approached the Supreme Court seeking intervention regarding the ongoing revival drive by the district administration. The mosque management has urged the apex court to direct the District Magistrate to maintain the status quo concerning a private well located near the entrance of the mosque.

In its plea, the committee emphasized that no action should be taken with regard to investigating or opening the well without prior permission from the court. The well, situated outside the mosque, has become a focal point amid a broader initiative by the Sambhal administration aimed at reviving historical temples and wells in the area.

Administration’s Revival Drive Raises Concerns

As part of the district administration’s efforts, reports indicate that 32 old and unused temples have been restored, and 19 historical wells have been identified for revival. The initiative claims to be aimed at restoring public access and religious significance to these structures.

The mosque committee, however, raised objections, stating that such actions could lead to unnecessary controversies. Their application highlighted that posters have been placed in Sambhal, including areas near the mosque, identifying the locations of these historical wells. The committee fears this move could create communal tensions and disturb the harmony in the region.

Legal Appeal to Prevent Unilateral Actions

The mosque management stressed the need for judicial oversight in the matter. “The district administration must refrain from taking steps regarding the well without proper permissions. The well holds historical and cultural significance and is situated within a sensitive area,” the plea read.

The committee has also expressed concerns about the district administration allegedly publicizing the revival efforts. It stated that public access to these wells, particularly near religious sites, could lead to misunderstandings about their historical or religious affiliation.

Call for Maintaining Peace and Order

In its appeal, the committee underscored the importance of preserving peace and communal harmony in the region. They urged the Supreme Court to ensure that the district administration adheres to legal protocols and avoids actions that could create unnecessary disputes.

The matter is now under consideration by the Supreme Court, which is expected to deliberate on the mosque committee’s concerns and provide directions to the district administration. This case highlights the delicate balance between heritage conservation and maintaining communal harmony in a diverse society.
