In a groundbreaking move, Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to officially implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, on Monday, expressed profound gratitude to the residents of the state and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their unwavering support in achieving this historic milestone.
Speaking to the media, CM Dhami said, “This achievement is a reflection of the trust and blessings of the people of Uttarakhand who gave us the opportunity to govern. We made a promise, and today we have fulfilled it. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the committee responsible for drafting the UCC for their invaluable contributions.”
A Landmark Moment Post-Independence
CM Dhami underlined the significance of this development, stating that Uttarakhand is now the first state to implement the UCC since India’s independence. He announced that January 27 would henceforth be celebrated as UCC Day to commemorate this historic occasion.
He added, “This is not just a legal reform; it is a step toward equality and justice for all citizens. A dedicated portal has been launched to ensure smooth registration under the new framework, and today marks the beginning of a new era for the state.”
The Vision Behind UCC
The Uniform Civil Code is designed to replace religion-based personal laws with a common set of laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and other personal matters. The objective is to ensure equality and uniformity across all communities, eliminating any biases or inconsistencies that exist in the current legal system.
The implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand reflects the state government’s commitment to fulfilling its electoral promises. It also aligns with the larger vision of ensuring justice and fairness in personal laws, as envisioned under Article 44 of the Indian Constitution.
A Step Toward National Debate
Uttarakhand’s decision has sparked widespread debate and is being closely watched across the country. Proponents view the UCC as a progressive reform promoting national integration and legal equality. Critics, however, argue that such a move must take into account India’s cultural and religious diversity to avoid alienating specific communities.
Setting a Precedent
With this initiative, Uttarakhand has set a precedent for other states to follow. The successful implementation of UCC in the state may pave the way for similar reforms across India. For now, the state stands as a pioneer in bringing legal uniformity, fostering equality, and taking a bold step forward in shaping a more inclusive society.
