Every Second Counts: UN Warns of Alarming Land Degradation Ahead of Desertification and Drought Day

June 17, 2025 — The United Nations has issued a grave warning on the occasion of Desertification and Drought Day 2025, highlighting the alarming speed at which healthy land is being degraded. According to the UN, every second, the world loses the equivalent of four football fields of productive land to degradation — a crisis with profound consequences for food security, biodiversity, and climate stability.
The campaign, led by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), urges global action to restore degraded lands and safeguard the remaining fertile areas. With the theme “Restore the Land. Unlock the Opportunities,” this year’s observance underscores the urgent need to reverse desertification trends and prevent drought-related disasters.
Land degradation, driven by unsustainable agriculture, deforestation, overgrazing, and the worsening effects of climate change, is affecting millions worldwide. It reduces the land’s ability to support crops, absorb carbon, and maintain ecosystems — pushing vulnerable communities further into poverty and increasing the risk of conflict over natural resources.
“Time is running out,” the UN emphasized in its public message, calling for immediate policy changes, restoration projects, and stronger international cooperation to halt the environmental destruction.
Desertification and Drought Day, marked every year on June 17, is a reminder that land is a finite resource — and its preservation is key to ensuring food, water, and resilience for current and future generations.
