United Nations, June 22, 2025 – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a grave warning following the United States’ bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, describing it as a “perilous turn” in an already fragile region. Guterres emphasized that the Middle East cannot withstand another wave of devastation and strongly urged all sides to act swiftly to prevent further escalation.

Speaking before the UN Security Council, Guterres highlighted the urgent need to halt hostilities and resume serious, long-term negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. He underscored that diplomacy must take precedence over retaliation, which risks plunging the region into a cycle of endless conflict.

“To prevent a spiral of retaliatory violence, we must prioritize diplomacy. The focus must shift from military actions to peaceful solutions,” Guterres stated.

He also stressed the importance of safeguarding civilians and ensuring the security of maritime routes, particularly in light of recent disruptions in international waters. “Safe maritime navigation must be guaranteed,” he added, highlighting the global stakes involved.

Guterres’ remarks signal a broader international concern over the implications of the strikes, not just for Iran and the U.S., but for global stability, economic security, and humanitarian safety.

His appeal serves as a reminder of the UN’s core mission — to maintain peace, protect human life, and foster dialogue in the face of global crises.
