Brussels, June 24, 2025 — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed her strong support for the recent announcement of a ceasefire by U.S. President Donald Trump, calling it a “significant move” toward restoring calm in a volatile region. In a statement posted on social media platform X, von der Leyen emphasized the urgent need for diplomacy and peaceful engagement.

“Europe welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire by President Trump,” she wrote. “It’s an important step towards restoring stability in a region in tension. This must be our collective priority.”

Her message comes amid heightened international concern over rising tensions in the Middle East following recent military escalations. While the exact nature of the ceasefire and the circumstances surrounding it remain developing, von der Leyen’s remarks underscore Europe’s continued advocacy for diplomatic dialogue as the only sustainable solution to regional conflict.

The European Commission President further called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to participate sincerely in meaningful negotiations. “We call on Iran to engage seriously in a credible diplomatic process,” she stated, reinforcing the European Union’s longstanding commitment to multilateral diplomacy.

Von der Leyen concluded her post with a strong affirmation of peaceful dialogue: “The negotiating table remains the only viable path forward.”

Her comments reflect the European Union’s broader foreign policy approach, which consistently favors conflict resolution through dialogue, international cooperation, and adherence to international norms. The EU has historically played a mediating role in U.S.-Iran relations, particularly during past negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

The latest development marks a critical moment for regional and global diplomacy, with hopes that this ceasefire could pave the way for a longer-term agreement that reduces tensions and ensures stability. As global leaders weigh in, the focus is now shifting toward how both Iran and Western powers respond, and whether this could lead to renewed efforts at rebuilding trust and cooperation.
