Kolkata, June 26, 2025 — West Bengal has garnered international applause for its pioneering approach to managing Type 1 Diabetes, as the state was awarded the Innovation in Paediatric Diabetes Care honor by the International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) at the ISPAD 2025 summit. This notable distinction is a powerful endorsement of the proactive public health work being undertaken by the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Government of West Bengal.

Announcing the achievement, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed immense pride, calling it a “historic public health achievement” that has brought “global recognition” to the state. She praised the relentless efforts of medical professionals, public health officials, and the broader health department team for turning this ambitious healthcare vision into a reality.

The recognition places West Bengal at the forefront of child and adolescent diabetes care, especially in regions facing rising chronic illness burdens. The state’s model—designed to address early diagnosis, continuous care, and awareness for Type 1 Diabetes in young populations—has attracted attention as a potentially replicable system for other states and countries tackling similar issues.

This award from ISPAD reflects not only West Bengal’s strong focus on healthcare delivery but also its ability to innovate within a challenging medical field. The autoimmune nature of Type 1 Diabetes demands lifelong treatment and specialized care frameworks—something the state has evidently succeeded in developing with patient-centric planning and implementation.

More than a trophy, this accolade represents the real-world impact of West Bengal’s investment in public health infrastructure and chronic disease management. It affirms that well-executed local strategies can influence and inspire health systems across borders.

As Chief Minister Banerjee concluded in her message, “Jai Bangla”—a proud declaration of the state’s spirit and commitment. This global recognition is expected to energize further healthcare innovation in Bengal and position it as a model for excellence not only within India but across the world.
