Recent debates on social media regarding the Rath Yatra in West Bengal have brought attention to the need for fact-based understanding of public events. A widely circulated claim alleged that the state administration had prohibited the Rath Yatra on grounds of maintaining law and order. However, this claim has been officially refuted by the West Bengal Police.

According to statements released by the authorities, the Rath Yatra procession was never banned and took place without any disruptions, continuing its annual tradition peacefully. The confusion arose from an entirely separate issue linked to a proposed fair (mela) associated with the Yatra.

The mela was intended to be held on private land, but the landowner did not provide a No Objection Certificate (NOC), which is mandatory for such events. Without this consent, the organizers took the matter to the High Court. The Court upheld the legal position, stating that in the absence of the landowner’s approval, permission for the mela could not be granted.

This situation underscores the critical importance of checking facts before accepting viral claims. The prompt response by the police helped dispel misinformation and ensured that the public was correctly informed about the status of the religious event.
