Brussels, Belgium – June 29, 2025 — The European Union today commemorates four decades since the adoption of its widely recognized flag — a circle of twelve golden stars against a deep blue sky — symbolizing unity, stability, and hope across Europe.

Originally endorsed on June 29, 1985, the flag was designed not to represent individual nations, but rather shared values and collective identity. In a message marking the anniversary, the European Commission reflected on the symbolism: “The twelve stars stand for harmony and the ideals that unite Europe, regardless of the number of member countries.”

Though first introduced by the Council of Europe in the 1950s, it wasn’t until 1985 that the then-European Economic Community — now the EU — formally adopted the design. This step signaled growing ambitions toward deeper political and economic cooperation among European states.

Since then, the flag has witnessed the evolution of the European Union, including major treaties, enlargements, crises, and milestones. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to Brexit and ongoing debates over migration, the flag has remained a constant symbol at the heart of European affairs.

Throughout its 40-year journey, the flag has adorned EU buildings, waved at pro-democracy protests, and stood proudly at diplomatic events — a quiet yet powerful representation of the continent’s desire for peace, solidarity, and a stronger shared voice in global matters.

As the EU looks ahead amid shifting geopolitics and technological transformation, the flag’s enduring symbolism continues to remind citizens of the common values that bind them together — democracy, human rights, and cooperation. The golden circle of stars remains a beacon of Europe’s collective vision for the future.
