Macron Urges Iran to Release French Detainees and Resume Nuclear Talks During First Call with President Pezeshkian

Paris, June 30 – In his first official phone call with Iran’s newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, French President Emmanuel Macron pressed Tehran on several urgent matters, reaffirming France’s firm stance on human rights, regional stability, and nuclear transparency.
Macron’s top priority during the call was the immediate release of French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been detained in Iran under contentious circumstances. Their imprisonment has long been a source of diplomatic strain, and France is intensifying efforts for their release.
The French leader also stressed the importance of protecting French citizens and diplomatic facilities in Iran, asserting that any threat to them would be unacceptable.
In a broader regional context, Macron urged Tehran to respect existing ceasefire agreements, calling it essential for restoring peace in the Middle East. “Stability in the region depends on responsible engagement from all sides,” Macron stated.
Turning to nuclear concerns, he encouraged Iran to return to the negotiating table regarding its ballistic missile and nuclear programs, under the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Macron also pushed for immediate cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stating that full transparency is essential to rebuilding international trust.
“I will continue to work tirelessly in the coming days to achieve these objectives,” Macron concluded, signaling France’s continued engagement on all fronts.
This diplomatic outreach signals a renewed push by France to resolve longstanding tensions and revive dialogue with Iran under the leadership of President Pezeshkian.
