UNESCO and Japan: Celebrating 75 Years of Transformative Global Partnership

Marking 75 years of collaboration, UNESCO and Japan celebrate a remarkable journey grounded in a shared commitment to peace, sustainability, and human development. From rapid emergency responses to pioneering work in ocean science and ethical artificial intelligence, Japan’s contributions have expanded the reach and effectiveness of global initiatives. In conflict-affected Ukraine, with Japanese support, more than 550 cultural heritage professionals have been trained to protect and restore historical sites endangered by war. This initiative helps safeguard humanity’s shared legacy in the face of destruction and displacement.

Japan’s partnership with UNESCO also shines in the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Today, 107 countries are actively implementing ESD for 2030 programs, empowering young generations to build a sustainable future. These programs are often made possible through Japan’s steady financial backing, notably via Funds-in-Trust, which enable targeted and flexible support.
