Asia and the Pacific to Lead Global Energy Growth by 2040: ADB Champions Clean Energy Future

As the global energy landscape rapidly evolves, Asia and the Pacific are poised to become the epicenter of this transformation. According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), by 2040, the region will account for nearly two-thirds of global energy growth, underscoring its critical role in shaping the future of energy.
In response to this rising demand, the ADB has unveiled a comprehensive energy strategy focused on sustainability, resilience, and innovation. The latest initiative highlights the Bank’s commitment to steering the region toward a cleaner and more reliable energy future—one that aligns with global climate targets while meeting local development needs.
ADB’s approach is rooted in three pillars: policy leadership, targeted investments, and strong partnerships. By leveraging these tools, the Bank aims to drive a “fundamental shift” in the region’s energy systems. This includes accelerating the adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower, as well as enhancing energy efficiency and promoting decarbonization across industries.
According to Priyantha Wijayatunga, Senior Director for Energy at ADB, “By combining policy leadership, targeted investments, and partnerships, ADB is supporting and accelerating a fundamental shift toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Asia and the Pacific.”
This transformation is not just about meeting future energy needs—it’s also about addressing present challenges. Many countries in the region continue to face energy poverty, climate vulnerability, and reliance on fossil fuels. ADB’s clean energy roadmap addresses these issues by supporting inclusive and equitable access to modern energy services while mitigating the environmental impact of power generation.
The Bank’s efforts are aligned with international goals such as the Paris Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). By guiding public and private sector stakeholders, ADB aims to catalyze billions of dollars in clean energy investments and enable countries to leapfrog toward sustainable development.
As the clock ticks toward 2040, the decisions made today will shape the region’s energy narrative for generations. With a proactive and strategic approach, ADB is helping ensure that the region’s energy growth is not only rapid—but also green, inclusive, and future-ready.
