Washington, D.C.

In a fiery Truth Social post made just an hour ago, President Donald Trump called on professional sports team owners to reverse name changes that he claims have erased longstanding cultural heritage and disregarded the sentiments of Native American communities.

Trump specifically urged the Washington Commanders to revert to their former identity, the Washington Redskins, and the Cleveland Guardians to reclaim their historic name, the Cleveland Indians. These name changes were implemented in recent years amidst national discussions about racial sensitivity and the representation of Indigenous communities in sports.

“There is a big clamoring for this,” President Trump wrote. “Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them.”

Trump’s comments come at a time when debates over political correctness and tradition continue to shape American culture. He framed the current climate as a “time of passion and common sense,” arguing that recent cultural shifts that led to the name changes no longer reflect the views of the American people.

“Times are different now than they were three or four years ago,” Trump asserted, claiming that a renewed sense of patriotism and cultural pride justifies the restoration of the original team names.

The Washington Commanders, formerly known as the Redskins, changed their name in 2020 after decades of criticism from Native American advocacy groups who said the term “Redskins” was a racial slur. Similarly, the Cleveland Indians became the Guardians in 2022 to address concerns over racial and cultural insensitivity.

However, Trump’s post paints a different picture, suggesting that many Native Americans view these original names not as offensive, but as symbols of pride and recognition.

“We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!” Trump concluded, issuing a direct call to the NFL and MLB team owners.

The post has already sparked widespread reaction online, with supporters praising the push to preserve tradition, while critics argue that Trump is reigniting divisive cultural battles for political gain.

As of now, neither the NFL nor MLB has issued a response to President Trump’s remarks. Whether his words will have any influence on team ownership decisions remains to be seen, but the message clearly aligns with Trump’s broader campaign rhetoric emphasizing patriotism, heritage, and resistance to what he describes as “woke” culture.

Trump, who continues to lead the Republican field heading into the 2024 presidential election, is likely to use this message to rally his base and spark renewed debate over identity, tradition, and political correctness in America’s sports and society.
