President Trump Secures 90-Day Tariff Extension in Productive Call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum
In a recent telephone conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary extension of a trade arrangement between the two neighboring nations. The two leaders reportedly made substantial progress in deepening mutual understanding and strengthening cross-border cooperation.
During the discussion, both parties agreed to extend the existing trade framework for an additional 90 days. Under this renewed deal, Mexico will continue to apply significant tariffs: 25% on fentanyl, 25% on automobiles, and 50% on steel, aluminum, and copper exports. President Trump emphasized the strategic importance of these measures in protecting U.S. industries and combating the illegal drug trade.
President Sheinbaum also agreed to immediately eliminate several non-tariff trade barriers that had previously complicated bilateral commerce. This move is expected to ease regulatory constraints and promote more open trade flows between the two countries.
Over the next three months, U.S. and Mexican officials will engage in further negotiations with the goal of finalizing a long-term trade agreement. The President expressed optimism about reaching a formal deal, noting that the complexities of U.S.-Mexico trade differ from other international arrangements due to the unique dynamics of their shared border.
The high-level conversation included key members of President Trump’s administration, such as Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller was also present, reflecting the ongoing emphasis on border security, drug interdiction, and the fight against illegal immigration.
