Rome, August 2025 — The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has officially named Kenya as the world’s largest producer of raw camel milk for the year 2023, according to fresh data published on FAOSTAT, the agency’s global agriculture statistics platform.

In a recent update shared across social media, the FAO highlighted camel milk as a critical yet underappreciated resource in arid and semi-arid zones. Kenya’s leadership in this category reflects its deep-rooted pastoral heritage and strong reliance on camel-based dairy farming.

The top five camel milk-producing countries for 2023 are:

  1. Kenya 🇰🇪
  2. Somalia 🇸🇴
  3. Pakistan 🇵🇰
  4. Mali 🇲🇱
  5. Ethiopia 🇪🇹

These nations depend heavily on camel milk, both for nutritional needs and as a key income source. Camel milk is naturally rich in calcium, iron, Vitamin C, and immune-boosting properties, making it a lifeline for communities vulnerable to food insecurity.

Rounding out the top 10 producers are countries such as Saudi Arabia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Chad, and Niger—further cementing the African and Middle Eastern dominance in camelid dairy production.

This report comes as part of the FAO’s broader focus on camelids during the 2024–2025 “Year of Camelids” campaign. The initiative seeks to promote awareness of camelids—like camels, llamas, and alpacas—as sustainable livestock that contribute to food security and climate resilience.

As interest in sustainable and alternative dairy grows globally, camel milk is gaining traction as a health-conscious, eco-friendly option, especially in regions impacted by drought and climate stress.
