Brussels, 9 August 2025 — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has hailed the latest declaration by Armenia and Azerbaijan as an encouraging milestone toward a lasting peace in the South Caucasus.

In a statement released on Friday, von der Leyen described the announcement as “welcome news on the road to lasting peace,” emphasising that the success of the agreement will depend on how promptly and effectively the two sides carry out their commitments.

“The timely implementation of the agreed steps is now crucial,” she stressed, noting that this phase will determine whether the fragile progress achieved so far can translate into long-term stability.

The European Union has been actively engaged in facilitating dialogue between Yerevan and Baku following decades of tensions, intermittent clashes, and the devastating 2020 conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. Von der Leyen reaffirmed that Brussels remains committed to supporting normalisation efforts that can secure “sustainable peace, stability, and prosperity for the region.”

Diplomatic observers see the latest agreement as a potential turning point, but warn that mistrust, unresolved disputes, and the need for robust monitoring mechanisms could still pose challenges. EU officials have indicated that further technical and humanitarian assistance may be provided to ensure both nations can meet their obligations under the deal.

“This is a critical opportunity for both sides,” von der Leyen said, adding that the EU stands ready to work with international partners to help Armenia and Azerbaijan turn the promise of peace into a lasting reality.
