INDIA Bloc MPs Detained During Protest March to Election Commission Over Voter List Dispute

New Delhi, August 11, 2025 — A dramatic standoff unfolded in the capital today as members of the opposition’s INDIA bloc were stopped and taken into custody while marching to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters. The leaders were protesting what they allege is “vote theft” through the manipulation of electoral rolls.
The protest began from Parliament’s Makar Dwar, where dozens of MPs assembled carrying placards and raising slogans demanding a “clean and transparent” voter list. However, police erected heavy barricades along Parliament Street, halting the march midway. The situation grew tense as opposition lawmakers refused to disperse, leading to several being escorted to nearby police stations before being released later in the day.
Leaders from across the alliance stated that their agitation was not about party politics, but about protecting democracy, the Constitution, and the principle of “one person, one vote.” They claimed recent Special Intensive Revisions (SIR) of voter lists were being used to arbitrarily remove the names of legitimate voters, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities and rural populations.
“This is not just a protest; it is a fight to safeguard every citizen’s right to vote,” one senior leader remarked, warning that such changes could disenfranchise thousands ahead of upcoming state elections.
The ruling party and the Election Commission, however, dismissed the allegations, insisting that the roll revisions are a standard process to eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries. They accused the opposition of undermining trust in democratic institutions for political gain.
With the INDIA bloc vowing to escalate its campaign through legal action and nationwide demonstrations, the dispute over voter list integrity is likely to remain a flashpoint in the run-up to critical polls. Observers say the episode has added new urgency to the debate over electoral transparency and public trust in India’s democratic process.
