India Expands Skill Development Initiatives to Empower Youth and Meet Global Workforce Demands

Under the Skill India Mission (SIM), the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is implementing a wide network of training programmes to equip India’s youth with industry-relevant skills. Through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) via Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), the mission is providing skill, reskill, and upskill opportunities to citizens across both urban and rural areas.
The ministry works in partnership with private companies to execute these initiatives. As of June 30, 2025, details of state-wise training under PMKVY 4.0 and signed MoUs are available on the MSDE website. The Directorate General of Training (DGT) also collaborates with industry under the Craft Instructor Training Scheme (CITS), with related data published online.
CSR partnerships with organisations like IBM India, Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe India, Amazon Web Services, and the Future Right Skills Network have benefited over 2.5 million young people by offering training in advanced and emerging technologies.
The National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) acts as the national regulator, setting standards and accrediting awarding bodies and assessment agencies—currently 61 and 68, respectively.
Key initiatives include MoUs with 12 countries to align skills with global needs, 30 planned Skill India International Centres, AI-focused training for women in collaboration with Microsoft, industry-integrated training via Flexi MoUs, and the establishment of Indian Institutes of Skills (IIS) in Ahmedabad and Mumbai under PPP mode.
These efforts aim to build an Industry 4.0-ready workforce, strengthen India’s skill ecosystem, and expand opportunities for youth both domestically and abroad.
