Shimla, August 12, 2025 — The relentless monsoon in Himachal Pradesh has caused widespread devastation, pushing the death toll to 229 since June 20. Of these, 119 people lost their lives in rain-triggered calamities such as landslides, flash floods, and house collapses, while 110 fatalities were reported from road accidents during the same period.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirmed that in just the past 24 hours, the extreme weather has left 395 roads impassable, damaged 669 electricity distribution transformers, and disrupted 529 water supply schemes across various districts.

Three major national highways remain blocked:

  • NH-305 in Kullu district
  • NH-505 in Lahaul & Spiti
  • NH-707 in Sirmaur

Landslides and sudden flooding are the main culprits, with Kullu, Mandi, and Chamba emerging as the worst-affected districts in terms of infrastructure breakdown and power supply interruptions.

Restoration teams are working round the clock to reopen roads, repair damaged power lines, and restore water supply. However, officials say continuous rainfall and recurring landslides are significantly slowing progress.

Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety advisories, as the risk of further landslides remains high while the monsoon continues to batter the state.
