Orban Rejects EU’s Conditional Stance Ahead of Trump-Putin Talks, Calls for Direct EU-Russia Dialogue

As the countdown continues to the high-profile meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has distanced himself from a European Council initiative aimed at issuing a joint statement on behalf of all EU leaders. The proposed statement sought to outline conditions for the summit, a move Orban firmly opposed.
Explaining his position, Orban pointed out that the European Union has no formal role in the U.S.-Russia talks and was not invited to participate. He argued that trying to set terms for a meeting from which the EU is excluded would be both inappropriate and counterproductive. “It is already disappointing that the EU has been left out,” he remarked, adding that the situation would only worsen if European leaders attempted to “give instructions from the sidelines.”
The Hungarian leader criticized the idea of offering unsolicited guidance to Washington and Moscow, suggesting that such behavior diminishes the EU’s diplomatic standing. Instead, he proposed a more active strategy: organizing an EU-Russia summit modeled on the U.S.-Russia meeting. According to Orban, this would provide a meaningful platform for direct engagement and constructive dialogue.
In closing his remarks, Orban appealed for a renewed commitment to diplomacy, stating, “Let’s give peace a chance.” His comments underscore his belief that communication and mutual respect, rather than conditions and criticism, are essential for building a stable relationship between Europe and Russia.
This stance reveals a notable split within the European Union over its approach to Moscow, with Hungary advocating for engagement while others prefer a more guarded, precondition-driven strategy.
