India–New Zealand Ties Strengthen as Luxon Marks Independence Day with Kiwi-Indians

Auckland, August 17, 2025 – New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon underscored the growing importance of India to New Zealand’s future while joining the Indian community in celebrating India’s Independence Day at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Auckland.
Speaking at the event, Luxon highlighted India’s role as a key partner in New Zealand’s prosperity, security, and society. He stressed that the relationship goes beyond cultural connections, offering major opportunities for trade, investment, and innovation that will benefit both nations.
“India is central to New Zealand’s economic future,” Luxon noted, adding that the expanding Indian diaspora in New Zealand is already enriching Kiwi society with its entrepreneurial spirit, cultural vibrancy, and commitment to progress.
The event drew hundreds of Kiwi-Indians who gathered to mark India’s 79th Independence Day. Traditional performances, cultural showcases, and flag-hoisting ceremonies created a festive atmosphere, reflecting the strong bonds between the two countries.
Luxon emphasized that fostering stronger ties with India would remain a priority for his government, pointing to shared democratic values and mutual interests in regional stability. “The India–New Zealand relationship is about people, prosperity, and partnership,” he said.
The commemoration not only honored India’s historic journey to freedom but also signaled a forward-looking vision for deeper engagement between Wellington and New Delhi in the years ahead.
