Italy Reaffirms Commitment to Syria’s Reconstruction in UN Meeting with President Al Sharaa

New York, September — On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level week, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Syrian President Ahmed Al Sharaa to discuss Italy’s role in supporting Syria’s recovery and long-term stability.
Italy’s Support for a Sovereign Syria
According to government sources, Meloni emphasized that Italy views Syria’s reconstruction as a crucial step toward ensuring both national sovereignty and regional security. She noted that Italian businesses are prepared to explore opportunities in infrastructure, health, water management, and other sectors where cooperation could prove mutually beneficial.
Meloni further underlined that this approach aligns with Rome’s broader foreign policy priorities: promoting stability in the Mediterranean region while backing development projects that directly benefit local populations.
Focus on Development and Social Inclusion
The Italian leader also pointed to her government’s active role in development cooperation programs across Syria. These initiatives, she said, are designed to strengthen basic services, improve education, and reinforce local governance structures.
During the meeting, Meloni stressed the importance of ensuring that reconstruction efforts do not exclude vulnerable groups. She specifically referenced the Christian community and other minorities, calling for their protection and integration into Syria’s future social and political framework.
Refugees and the Path to Return
Another central issue raised was the ongoing displacement of millions of Syrians. Meloni reiterated that Italy supports conditions that would allow refugees to return home voluntarily, securely, and with dignity. Achieving this goal, she argued, requires international cooperation, adequate infrastructure, and restored social services within Syria.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with a shared understanding that rebuilding Syria will be a gradual and complex process. For Italy, the path forward involves a mix of private investment, humanitarian assistance, and strong diplomatic engagement. By balancing these efforts, Meloni said, Italy aims to contribute to a future Syria that is sovereign, inclusive, and resilient.
