Ursula von der Leyen Welcomes Global Health Security Report, Calls for Unified Implementation

Brussels – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed her appreciation for the recently released report by the High-Level Independent Panel on Global Health Security, describing it as an “ambitious and forward-looking framework” for strengthening international preparedness and response to future health emergencies.
In her remarks, von der Leyen commended the panel’s “bold vision” and reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to reinforcing global cooperation in public health. “The report sets out a bold vision for stronger global health security and reinforces our shared global commitment,” she said.
Highlighting the importance of coordination among international partners, von der Leyen emphasized that the implementation of the panel’s recommendations should align closely with the ongoing work of the G20 Joint Finance and Health Task Force and the Pandemic Agreement currently under negotiation at the World Health Organization (WHO).
“These frameworks are essential to ensure that financial mechanisms and health governance structures work hand in hand,” she noted. “Together, we can create a safer, healthier world for all citizens.”
The High-Level Independent Panel’s report outlines key recommendations to strengthen global systems for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. It calls for better financing tools, improved data-sharing mechanisms, and stronger coordination between governments and multilateral institutions.
Von der Leyen’s statement reflects the European Union’s ongoing efforts to play a leading role in shaping post-pandemic reforms. The EU has consistently advocated for increased transparency, equitable access to vaccines and treatments, and resilient healthcare systems capable of responding swiftly to future crises.
As global discussions continue on the Pandemic Agreement, von der Leyen’s remarks underline the urgency of turning lessons from the COVID-19 crisis into concrete action. Her message reinforces the EU’s belief that international solidarity and well-coordinated policy responses remain the cornerstone of global health security.
