San Francisco – Tech entrepreneur and xAI founder Elon Musk has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform his company’s knowledge project, Grokipedia, into what he calls the “Encyclopedia Galactica” — a vast, open-source digital archive designed to encompass the entirety of human understanding across text, audio, image, and video.

“When Grokipedia is good enough (long way to go), we will change the name to Encyclopedia Galactica,” Musk announced in a social media post. “It will be an open-source distillation of all knowledge, including audio, images and video.”

The project represents Musk’s latest vision to merge artificial intelligence with universal access to information — a digital evolution inspired by the legendary Library of Alexandria, the ancient world’s most famous repository of knowledge.

Through xAI, Musk aims to build an intelligent system capable of gathering, organizing, and presenting verified information from multiple domains — science, history, technology, culture, and beyond — in a format accessible to all. The inclusion of multimedia formats suggests that Encyclopedia Galactica will go beyond traditional text-based encyclopedias, potentially becoming an interactive and AI-driven platform that learns and evolves over time.

Musk described the concept as the “sci-fi version of the Library of Alexandria,” inviting developers, researchers, and engineers to join xAI in shaping what could become the world’s most advanced knowledge-sharing platform.

The initiative aligns with Musk’s broader mission to democratize access to artificial intelligence and ensure that technology serves as a tool for collective progress rather than centralized control. By emphasizing open-source development, he envisions a collaborative ecosystem where contributors worldwide can help refine and expand the database.

Experts suggest that the Encyclopedia Galactica could redefine how humanity archives and interacts with information, integrating machine learning models capable of interpreting context, generating insights, and providing real-time multimedia references.

While still in its early conceptual stage, Musk’s vision underscores his ongoing pursuit of blending science fiction concepts with real-world innovation — from electric vehicles and space exploration to AI and global knowledge networks.

As Musk put it, “Join xAI to help build the sci-fi version of the Library of Alexandria!” — a call to help shape a future where all human knowledge is preserved, enhanced, and shared across generations.
