Indian Navy Joins Search Operation After Distress Call From Vessel Near Sri Lanka

A maritime distress alert involving the vessel IRIS Dena triggered an international search and rescue response in the waters near southern Sri Lanka earlier this week. According to information shared by the Sri Lanka Navy, the distress signal was received by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Colombo (MRCC Colombo) during the early hours of 4 March 2026.
The ship was reportedly sailing approximately 20 nautical miles west of the coastal city of Galle when the emergency message was transmitted. The location falls within the Search and Rescue (SAR) region for which Sri Lanka holds operational responsibility.
Soon after the alert was received, Sri Lankan authorities initiated search efforts and began coordinating with regional partners. In response, the Indian Navy quickly mobilized support to strengthen the ongoing rescue operation.
To assist in locating the vessel and assessing the situation at sea, the Indian Navy deployed a long-range maritime patrol aircraft at around 10:00 AM on 4 March 2026. The aircraft was tasked with conducting aerial surveillance over the designated search area to support the rescue mission led by Sri Lanka.
Additionally, another aircraft equipped with air-droppable life rafts was placed on standby for rapid deployment if needed. These emergency rafts are designed to be dropped from the air to assist survivors in the water until rescue teams arrive.
The joint response highlights the strong maritime cooperation between India and Sri Lanka in ensuring safety in the busy sea lanes of the Indian Ocean region. Coordinated search and rescue operations are essential in these waters, which are frequently used by commercial and cargo vessels traveling between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while search teams work to gather further information about the vessel and the circumstances surrounding the distress call. The swift action by both countries reflects the importance of regional collaboration in responding to maritime emergencies and protecting lives at sea.
