Russia Slams ‘Unacceptable’ Strike Near Bushehr Nuclear Plant, Urges Global Condemnation

Russia has strongly condemned what it described as an “absolutely unacceptable” missile or projectile strike near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, warning that such actions pose serious risks to nuclear safety and regional stability.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized the reported attack, emphasizing that targeting or endangering nuclear infrastructure could lead to catastrophic consequences. She called on both the United States and Israel to immediately abandon what she termed “reckless” military actions involving Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The incident reportedly occurred close to the operational reactor at the Bushehr plant—Iran’s only functioning nuclear power facility—raising international alarm over the potential for a radiological disaster. However, early assessments indicated no casualties or radiation leaks following the strike.
Russia, which has played a key role in building and supporting the Bushehr facility, expressed particular concern over the safety of nuclear infrastructure and personnel. Officials warned that even limited damage near such a sensitive site could trigger far-reaching environmental and humanitarian consequences.
Zakharova also called for a clear and unequivocal response from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), urging the global nuclear watchdog to take a firm stand against any actions that threaten nuclear safety standards.
The IAEA has acknowledged the incident and confirmed that, so far, no significant damage to nuclear material or facilities has been detected. Nonetheless, the agency has urged all parties involved in the escalating regional tensions to exercise maximum restraint to avoid a potential nuclear crisis.
The development comes amid heightened conflict in the Middle East, where military actions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States have intensified in recent weeks. Experts warn that continued strikes near nuclear sites could dramatically escalate the situation, turning a geopolitical conflict into a global environmental emergency.
As tensions remain high, Russia’s statement reflects growing international concern that any miscalculation involving nuclear infrastructure could have irreversible consequences far beyond the immediate conflict zone.
