Egypt Accelerates Natural Gas Production to Strengthen Energy Security
Egypt is stepping up efforts to strengthen its domestic energy supply by increasing oil and natural gas production, accelerating new discoveries and developing strategic energy projects, according to the country’s government.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly reviewed the government’s energy-security plans with Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi on September 1, 2026, with officials focusing on maintaining reliable supplies for different sectors of the economy.
New gas well begins production ahead of schedule
A major development highlighted during the meeting was the start of production at the Fayoum-4 well in the West Nile Delta.
The well began producing two years ahead of schedule and is expected to add approximately 80 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day.
The government said the project benefited from accelerated development and the use of existing offshore infrastructure, allowing the new production to be connected to the country’s energy system more quickly.
Government prioritizes stable energy supplies
Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized that securing energy supplies remains a major government priority.
Authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure that petroleum products and natural gas remain available to households, businesses and different economic sectors.
The Petroleum Ministry is also monitoring supply conditions and preparing alternative operating scenarios to respond quickly to potential disruptions.
Focus on faster development of discoveries
The government is seeking to shorten the time between exploration discoveries and commercial production.
Badawi stressed the importance of integrating exploration, development and production activities while accelerating the connection of new wells to existing infrastructure.
The strategy is aimed at increasing domestic production and making better use of Egypt’s natural resources.
Egyptian energy companies expand overseas
Egypt is also looking to increase the international presence of its petroleum-sector companies.
Petrojet has signed a contract worth approximately $22.7 million to implement a natural-gas supply project for the Al-Muwaqqar Development and Industrial Area south of Amman, Jordan.
The government views such projects as an opportunity to expand into new markets and use Egyptian technical expertise in regional energy and infrastructure projects.
Mediterranean exploration remains important
The Petroleum Ministry is continuing strategic oil and gas projects with international energy companies, including exploration programmes and development drilling in the Mediterranean Sea.
Egypt hopes that these activities will contribute to higher domestic production and help develop additional oil and natural-gas resources.

Egypt’s latest measures demonstrate the government’s effort to strengthen energy security while supporting wider economic activity.
