NATO Jets Intercept Drone Over Lithuanian Airspace as European Security Concerns Rise
NATO fighter aircraft have intercepted and destroyed a drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace, creating a fresh security concern along the alliance’s eastern flank.
Lithuanian officials said the drone crossed into the country from the direction of Belarus and was brought down near the village of Pratkūnai in Kaunas County. The incident was described as the first known occasion in which a NATO aircraft shot down a drone over Lithuanian territory.
Italian fighter jets participating in NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission were involved in the interception. Italy’s defence minister said the drone most probably originated from Russia, although investigations into its precise origin and purpose were continuing.
The incident comes amid heightened military activity around the Baltic region as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues. European governments have become increasingly concerned about drones crossing national borders, particularly when their origin or intended purpose cannot immediately be established.
Lithuanian authorities have stressed the importance of maintaining strong air-defence capabilities and rapid coordination between NATO members. The alliance has maintained enhanced air-policing arrangements in the Baltic region as part of its broader effort to protect member-state airspace.
The drone incident also occurred against a backdrop of other security developments in northern Europe. Danish authorities said a Russian naval vessel had been involved in an incident involving flares and a Danish military helicopter operating in the Baltic Sea. Russia rejected accusations of deliberate provocation.
For NATO, the episode highlights the difficulty of separating accidental airspace violations from deliberate activity during a period of elevated regional tensions. Lithuania has experienced repeated drone incursions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but the latest interception represents a significant escalation in the response.
European governments are continuing to strengthen surveillance and air-defence arrangements as they seek to prevent the war in Ukraine from creating wider security incidents beyond Ukraine’s borders.
The latest development is therefore being closely watched by NATO members, particularly countries located along the alliance’s eastern frontier.
