Nepal Steps Up Rescue and Relief Operations After Major Flooding
The Government of Nepal has intensified search, rescue and relief operations following severe flooding in the Rasuwa and surrounding areas, with government agencies coordinating emergency assistance for affected communities.
Nepal’s official government information portal has been publishing regular situation updates covering rescue operations, temporary shelters, relief distribution and essential services in the affected areas. Government authorities have also been coordinating the response through local administrations and security agencies.
The flooding has affected important transport and supply routes. Authorities have therefore taken additional measures to maintain the delivery of essential goods and services to communities facing disruption.
One of the government’s immediate priorities has been providing relief materials to people displaced or otherwise affected by the flooding. Local authorities have established holding centres where relief supplies are collected and distributed according to identified needs.
The government has also worked to maintain communication services in affected locations. Nepal Telecom has provided free voice calls, data and SMS services to customers in flood-affected areas, with the arrangement continuing until further notice.
Communication has been particularly important during the emergency because damaged roads and difficult terrain have affected access to some locations. Authorities have also made satellite phones available to improve communications in areas where normal telecommunications have been disrupted.
Nepal’s security agencies have been involved in rescue operations, including work at hydropower project sites affected by flooding. Teams involving the Nepal Army and technical personnel have been deployed to support search and rescue operations.
The government has also established temporary shelters for affected residents. According to an update issued through the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers’ Office, shelters were established in Rasuwa and Nuwakot, with federal authorities continuing to supply relief materials.
Food assistance has formed another part of the response. Fresh vegetables and other food supplies were sent to people affected by the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli floods, with assistance coordinated through government-linked market institutions and participating traders.
The disruption has also affected the movement of fuel and other essential supplies. After flooding blocked a section of the Prithvi Highway, authorities arranged an alternative system for supplying liquefied petroleum gas to Kathmandu Valley and nearby districts.
Government authorities have continued to publish situation reports so that information on rescue, relief and emergency services can be updated as operations progress.
The Prime Minister and Council of Ministers’ Office has also appealed to people and organisations providing financial assistance to flood victims to remain cautious and use officially designated channels. The government has separately appealed for contributions to the Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund and Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
The continuing government updates demonstrate the scale of the emergency response, with federal agencies, security personnel, local administrations and service providers involved in different parts of the operation.
