Zelenskyy and Peru President Keiko Fujimori Discuss Ukraine’s Drone Technology, Russia Policy and Bilateral Trade
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has held a conversation with Peru’s newly inaugurated President Keiko Fujimori, marking their first direct exchange since she assumed office. During the discussion, Zelenskyy congratulated Fujimori on her electoral victory and highlighted the importance of maintaining Peru’s position against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Fujimori was officially sworn in as Peru’s president for the 2026–2031 term on July 28, following the country’s presidential election.
Peru’s Position on Russia’s Invasion
A key issue raised during the conversation was Peru’s foreign-policy position regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine. Zelenskyy said Fujimori had confirmed that Peru’s policy of condemning Russia’s invasion would remain unchanged.
The Ukrainian president framed the issue as part of a broader principle: violations involving the destruction of human life should be condemned consistently, regardless of where they occur. For Kyiv, maintaining international opposition to Russia’s invasion remains an important element of its diplomatic outreach.
The conversation comes as Ukraine continues intensive diplomatic efforts to strengthen international support while pursuing negotiations and broader cooperation with partners around the world. Zelenskyy’s office recently said that foreign-policy activity had included efforts involving air defence, peace negotiations, international coalitions and cooperation under Ukraine’s Drone Deal framework.
Ukraine Highlights Its Drone Capabilities
Another major subject was Ukraine’s rapidly developing drone technology. Zelenskyy explained that Ukraine has developed and routinely uses drone systems for a range of wartime tasks.
According to his account, these technologies are used not only in military operations but also in responding to the aftermath of Russian attacks and supporting relief activities. He suggested that similar capabilities could potentially have applications in emergency response and border protection.
Ukraine has increasingly emphasized domestic drone production as a significant part of its technological and defence development. The country has also been establishing bilateral arrangements with foreign partners through its Drone Deal initiative.
The technology has become particularly significant during the ongoing conflict. Recent Ukrainian statements have emphasized the expanding role of drones in defence and international security cooperation.
Scope for Stronger Ukraine-Peru Trade
Economic relations were another important component of the discussion. Zelenskyy said there was considerable room to expand trade between Ukraine and Peru.
Rather than limiting bilateral relations to political dialogue, the two sides discussed the possibility of strengthening economic cooperation. Greater commercial engagement could provide another foundation for relations between the two countries as Ukraine seeks to deepen partnerships beyond its immediate European neighbourhood.
The discussion also reflects Peru’s broader effort to maintain an active international agenda under Fujimori’s new administration. Peru has recently been coordinating foreign-policy matters through its government and foreign ministry, including preparations for international engagements.
Commitment to Continued Dialogue
Zelenskyy said the two leaders agreed that their teams would continue working on the issues raised during the conversation. He also indicated that he and Fujimori intend to maintain direct communication.
The agreement provides a framework for further discussions covering political positions, technology, emergency applications, border protection and trade. For Ukraine, engagement with Peru could also strengthen its diplomatic presence in Latin America.
The conversation therefore represents more than a routine exchange between two newly connected administrations. It brings together Ukraine’s search for broader international partnerships and Peru’s new government as it establishes its foreign-policy priorities.
With both sides agreeing to continue dialogue at official and presidential levels, the conversation could serve as an initial step toward broader Ukraine-Peru cooperation in the coming months.
