Strong Pharmaceutical Performance Lifts Swiss Economic Growth
BERN: Switzerland’s economy recorded its strongest quarterly expansion in almost five years during the second quarter of 2026, with particularly strong performance from the country’s chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

According to figures released by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, the economy expanded by 1.5% compared with the previous quarter. The result represents a significant acceleration from the 0.5% growth recorded in the first quarter.
The pharmaceutical and chemical sector was the main contributor to the improvement. The industry expanded by 10.5% during the quarter, supported by stronger exports and increased sales.
The broader manufacturing sector also recorded growth, although at a more moderate pace. Services continued to expand as well, providing additional support to overall economic activity.
The latest figures offer a positive signal for Switzerland after several weaker quarters. Improved economic conditions in Europe, including stronger-than-expected performance in Germany, have also provided a favorable environment for Swiss exporters.
Business sentiment has shown signs of improvement. Switzerland’s Purchasing Managers’ Index climbed to 57.1 in August, indicating stronger activity in the private sector.
However, economists caution that the exceptional second-quarter growth rate may not be repeated immediately. Switzerland is still exposed to international developments, including energy-price movements and geopolitical uncertainty.
Inflation is another issue attracting attention. Consumer prices increased more rapidly in August as higher fuel costs pushed up the overall price level. The development could influence expectations surrounding future decisions by the Swiss National Bank.
Despite these risks, the latest economic data suggest that Switzerland entered the second half of 2026 with considerable momentum.
The pharmaceutical and chemical industries are likely to remain particularly important to the country’s economic performance because of their strong contribution to exports and international trade.
Economic Outlook
Switzerland’s second-quarter performance has strengthened expectations for continued economic resilience, although policymakers and businesses will be watching inflation, energy prices and international demand closely in the months ahead.
