Delhi Protest Row Intensifies as Viral Video Triggers Fresh Demands for Action in Jantar Mantar Assault Case
New Delhi: A dispute surrounding an alleged assault during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has erupted into a wider political and legal controversy after a video featuring social-media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj circulated widely online.

Members and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) marched towards the Parliament Street Police Station on September 4, demanding stronger action in connection with the alleged assault on Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad. The incident has also drawn the attention of opposition politicians, turning what began as a protest-related confrontation into a broader debate over policing, political influence and accountability.
How the Controversy Began
The underlying incident took place during a CJP protest at Jantar Mantar on June 23, according to Delhi Police. Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad, suffered a head injury during a confrontation at the protest site.
The controversy returned to the spotlight after an old podcast clip featuring Bhardwaj began circulating on social media. In the video, he appeared to describe striking Nishu Azad’s father with a metal bracelet, commonly referred to as a kada, and made claims about why he had not spent time in jail.
Those remarks generated strong reactions from CJP supporters and opposition figures, who demanded that the authorities take stricter action.
Police Reject Claims of Political Protection
Delhi Police has rejected allegations that political connections prevented appropriate action.
According to the police, Sanjay Kumar’s injuries were medically assessed at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and were described as simple in nature. Police also said the injury was caused by a metal bracelet rather than a weapon and disputed social-media claims about a skull fracture.
Police further stated that the case was registered on the basis of Kumar’s complaint. Two people, including Swatantra Bhardwaj and Suraj Kumar, were detained from the protest location, subsequently questioned and served notices. Authorities said a chargesheet would be filed before the appropriate court.
CJP Demands Arrest and Tougher Charges
Despite the police explanation, CJP members have continued to demand stronger legal action.
The organisation has called for Bhardwaj’s arrest and has sought consideration of an attempt-to-murder charge as well as provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, arguing that the incident has a caste-related dimension.
CJP representatives led a march from Patel Chowk towards Parliament Street Police Station on Friday. The demonstration was accompanied by a substantial police deployment as tensions remained high around the protest location.
Bhardwaj Gives a Different Account
Bhardwaj has subsequently offered a different explanation of the confrontation.
He has said that what critics are describing as an attack was actually self-defence. According to his account, he was surrounded by a group of people and feared that he could be seriously harmed. He says he struck Kumar with his kada while attempting to protect himself.
Bhardwaj has also disputed the interpretation of the viral podcast clip, saying that some of his comments were made jokingly or sarcastically. He has maintained that he is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Political Leaders Enter the Debate
The case has now moved beyond the immediate participants in the protest.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi publicly expressed support for Nishu Azad and questioned why the alleged attacker remained outside jail. Arvind Kejriwal also shared the controversial video and criticised what he portrayed as political protection.
At the same time, Bhardwaj’s claims about having connections with political figures have become a central part of the controversy. The people named in those claims have become part of the political debate, although the allegations of political intervention have been rejected by Delhi Police.
Police Say Investigation Will Follow the Law
The Delhi Police has stressed that the case is being handled according to established legal procedures and has specifically denied that political pressure influenced the investigation.
That position has not satisfied the protesters, who argue that the seriousness of the incident requires more stringent sections of law and immediate arrest.
The disagreement therefore centres on two very different narratives: protesters say the accused has effectively admitted to a serious assault and should face stronger charges, while the police say the medical evidence does not support some of the more serious claims and that the accused have already been dealt with through the legal process.
Fresh Assurance Raises Expectations
The confrontation outside Parliament Street Police Station has added another development to the case. Nishu Azad and other protesters said police assured them that action against Bhardwaj would follow within 72 hours.
Whether that assurance results in an arrest or further changes to the case will depend on the investigation and the legal assessment of the evidence.
A Larger Debate Over Protest Safety
The incident has also revived questions about safety at public demonstrations in the national capital.
Political protests often bring together competing groups, making crowd management particularly important. When physical confrontations occur, questions over who initiated the violence, the severity of injuries and whether the response was proportionate can quickly become matters of public and political dispute.
In this case, the circulation of video footage has added another layer to the investigation. Different sides are using different portions of the available footage and statements to support their respective versions of events.
What Happens Next?
For now, the case remains under investigation. Police have said they are preparing the matter for further legal proceedings, while protesters continue demanding stronger action.
The biggest questions are likely to be whether the investigation results in additional charges, whether an arrest takes place, and how the courts ultimately assess the evidence surrounding the confrontation.
The controversy illustrates how quickly an incident at a protest can expand into a national political issue once videos, competing allegations and questions about police action enter the public arena.
